Sims Metal Waste Acceptance Criteria: Ferrous Grades
Sims Metal are able to handle a wide range of ferrous scrap metals, however please be aware that certain wastes are not acceptable within these grades and are either not permitted, or fall under different scrap grades and hence commercial and handling requirements.
Non-Permitted Waste within Ferrous Grades
The wastes listed below are NOT permitted under any circumstances and can have potentially significant Health and Safety and Environment implications if not handled correctly, please DO NOT include them in your ferrous scrap grades.
- Orphaned gas cylinders
- Pressure vessels / sealed vessels / LPG tanks
- Radioactive materials
- Asbestos
- Liquids (such as poisons, chemicals and corrosives)
- Flammable items, including explosives and munitions
- Sharps/biohazards
- Impurities: Non-metallic items (e.g. – Dirt/Wood/ rags/ tyres/ general rubbish)
- Beer kegs or branded cables from unauthorised sources
- Tyres

Not Acceptable in HMS Supplies or Shredder Feed Supplies
In addition to those items listed above as NOT acceptable in any supplies, the below are not acceptable in supplies of HMS or Shredder feed supplies as noted below separately.
HMS Supplies – Not Acceptable
- White goods of any description
- Sheared ELVs
- Free dirt and/or concrete
- Civic Amenity scrap
- Incinerated material
- Batteries of any type
- Refrigeration equipment including end-of-life fridges (ELF)
- TV/monitors
- Small mixed WEEE (SMW)
- Transformers
- Any substances hazardous to health or the environment
Shredder Feed Supplies – Not Acceptable
- Free dirt and/or concrete
- Incinerated material
- Batteries of any type
- Refrigeration equipment including end-of-life fridges (ELF)
- TV/monitors
- Small mixed WEEE (SMW)
- Transformers
- Any substances hazardous to health or the environment
Penalties for Non-Conforming Supplies
With regards to non-conforming supplies, the following penalties will apply effective 1st January 2021:
Batteries | £5 per battery removed | |||

Refrigeration equipment including end-of-life fridges (ELF) | £20 per item | |||
Gas bottle / sealed cylinder | £50 per bottle removed | |||
Small mixed WEEE / TVs and monitors in HMS | Load rejection for excessive inclusion or £5 pt load downgrade where inclusion is deemed as error and minimal | |||
White goods in HMS | Entire load downgrade to shredder feed for excessive inclusion of £5 pt downgrade where inclusion is deemed as error and minimal e.g. 1 x item | |||
Impurities | 1.5 x weight deduction |

All our sites are appropriately permitted under the Environment Permitting Regulations 2010 (as amended) and authorised to receive a wide range of scrap metals including Ferrous and Non Ferrous scrap metals, End of Life Vehicles (ELV) and Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE).
